International Insurance Policy
Let’s talk about travel. It’s the perfect time of year to not be home, not be at work, not be in America. The beach is calling – strange lands, exotic food, and unfamiliar languages beckon adventure. Get on your feet and go! But before you do, ask yourself: Am I protected from accidents on this journey?
Domestic insurances protect you at home; however, many of these familiar American companies lack international coverages. As a result, many travelers do not even know about the risk when going abroad.
Introducing… travel insurance! Travel insurance is a unique insurance plan which protects and mitigates the risk of an international trip. Let’s say that while aboard a lengthy two-week cruise, you come down with a nasty infection and are hospitalized for the rest of your journey. Unfortunately, your domestic policy means absolutely nothing in the sands of Jamaica. With travel insurance, you will never be stranded in trouble abroad. With your standard medical and property protection, basic travel policies will pay more for these expenses, oftentimes without a deductible. However, do not think that travel insurance policies stop there.
Specific coverage types will offer additional benefits. Cruise insurance coverages can fully refund a botched ship experience. Whether it be plane delays or a ship malfunction, policies can protect against these disasters. Furthermore, cancellation policies can cover emergency changes within the trip itinerary. Nationwide lists the following reasons for cruise cancellation/interruptions which warrant refunds: weather, an extension of school, operating session, work-related issues, and terrorism in an itinerary city.
The final and possibly most important reason to understand travel policies regards the country of interest. Following Covid-19 and the worldwide shutdown, many countries mandate a travel insurance policy. For example, in 2020, Jamaica implemented the “Jamaica Cares” program which requires insurance for all visitors. Offering a $40 fee, Jamaica Cares supplies a basic insurance policy to all tourists; however, most experts recommend searching for a third-party insurance supplier. Providers such as Travelex and Nationwide offer the basic selections for most holiday trips. Of course, this extra protection is not mandatory for many scenarios. The only takeaway should be to do your research, alleviate your worries, and go enjoy your summer vacation.
